We spend lots of time indoors, especially during the harsh Texas weather. With constantly running the air conditioning or heat, the air vents can become clogged. In some cases, the buildup of dirt and debris can cause allergies. Here is how to clean your air vents:
Open Windows and Blinds
By opening up your windows and blinds, this allows fresh air to come inside and prevents any more build up from occurring in the air vents. This is also a good time to clean the vents, especially when no air is running through them.
Remove All Coverings
To get to where the most of the buildup is, you need to unscrew the air vent covers. If the covers are dirty, you can soak them in a soapy, hot water solution. After they soak, you can dry and replace them.
Vacuum
Once the covers are removed, you can get a vacuum and insert it to collect any debris. You can also use a vacuum to clean other air vents located on the ceilings or floors. Sometimes you may need to get a damp rag to collect any stubborn dust that can be left. It is good practice to clean your air vents at least once a year, or if you notice an increase in allergies or dust in your home, this could mean you need to clean them.
Prevention
Preventing a buildup of dust in air vents can be hard, as it happens naturally, but there are a few things you can do to slow down the buildup including vacuuming floors often, giving your air conditioner a break, and cleaning your fan blades.
