Chores for Children

Why not get the whole family involved when it comes to cleaning? It can be difficult, especially with younger children, which is why you should learn about age appropriate chores for kids. This will not only teach them responsibility, but it will also encourage good cleaning habits.

Ages 3-4

At a young age, it is important not to overload tasks on a toddler as they can often become frustrated. This is the perfect time to encourage them to help you with cleaning so they become more familiar with the idea of it.

  • Assist in making the bed: This will encourage children to start a routine and know the importance of keeping their own space clean.
  • Picking up toys: Having kids pick up their own toys teaches them how to clean up after themselves.
  • Putting dirty clothes in a hamper: This is a very simple chore that will teach them good habits that they can use in the future.

Ages 5-6

This is the perfect age to do more organization oriented chores.

  • Setting the table: This chore shows responsibility and creates a habit to be clean and neat.
  • Put laundry away: Learning to put away clothes can assist in organization and routine.

Ages 7-9

At seven and up, children start to understand the importance of chores and they will be able to assist in more tasks, such as:

  • Take trash out
  • Dishwasher
  • Vacuum

Ages 9+

Usually children nine and over are capable of many chores and tasks. This is a good time to create a schedule of chores for them to complete. However, this is different for every family so it is important to customize it accordingly.
