The Struggle of Hard Water Stains

Hard water stains are common and can become a hassle. Some are worse than others, but one thing is for sure; the struggle of cleaning these stains.

What are Hard Water Stains?
The term “hard water” is often used but not the correct term. These stains are caused by the level of minerals in the water. When water travels through pipes and underground, it picks up surrounding minerals in the soil or sediment. Depending on how long and how often your water travels determines how “hard” the water will be. This leaves the stain that is commonly seen in bathtubs, showerheads and sinks.

Tips and Tricks
The struggle is real when it comes to cleaning these stains, but that does not mean it’s impossible. One tip is to use vinegar. The acidity of the vinegar combats the stain. For this, it is recommended to spray the vinegar directly on the surface and leave it for 15 minutes before rinsing. If the stain is harder, you can mix in baking soda to create a paste. The same applies with the paste, leave it on for 15 minutes then you can scrub away! This paste works for almost all surfaces including toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers, faucets and even glass shower doors. For trickier surfaces such as granite or marble countertops, it is best to use a gentle cleanser mixed with warm water. You do not want to use vinegar as it will dull the surface.

How to Prevent
It can be hard to prevent these stains due to the minerals, however, regularly cleaning the surfaces will decrease the number of stains. This will prevent any access dirt and keep things looking nice. In severe cases, a water softener can be used. A softener has multiple benefits including no hard water stains, clothes will be cleaner and soap will lather more.
